Tricolour flags, which became popular with groups such as the Irish and Newfoundlanders at the time of the French Revolution, were not invented in any one place. However, Newfoundland may have contributed to the inception of the Irish one.
Tricolours often represent two different groups coming together. In both the Irish and Newfie tricolours, green represents the Catholics and orange or pink represents the Protestants. White stands for peace between the two groups. As the story goes in Canada these colours were important as Catholic and Protestant settlers would use them to mark which cords of wood were theirs as they waited out the long winters.
It's believed that Thomas Francis Meagher was the first to fly the Irish flag in 1848 before being exiled by the British and becoming an American Civil War hero. However, Meagher's father was a Newfie born in St. John's.
There is a lot of confusion around the origins of the Newfie tricolour and how it influenced the Irish one.
