316 million gallons of water plummet over Niagara Falls every minute. This wonder has made the area a hot spot for tourism and the honeymoon capital of the world.
Most of the people intent on going over the falls are committing suicide. It has, however, attracted many daredevils who've done it in everything from barrels to rubber ball capsules. But three people have gone over unprotected and lived to tell about it!
In 1960, 7-year-old Roger Woodward was in a boat that capsized. Wearing a life jacket he was swept to almost certain death. Luckily he didn't hit the rocks after the 162 foot drop. The 'Maid of the Mist' sight seeing boat rescued him and the first thing that he asked for was a glass of water!
On October 18, 2003, a 40-year-old unemployed man named Kirk Jones felt that he had little to live for. Knowing that the odds were against him, he wanted to test fate and see if he could survive the plummet. He believed that if he lived through the fall that that would no doubt signify a dramatic change in his life. Jones became the second known person to go over the precipice without being in a protective capsule and walk away.
On March 11th, 2009, an unnamed man attempted suicide by way of the falls. After being spotted bobbing at the base he refused to swim to shore. A helicopter was called and the wind from its blades eventually forced him in.
These three people had beaten a cosmic lottery! Since 1850 it's estimated that the falls have claimed 5,000 lives. Going over isn't recommended.
